While the Final Fantasy community as a whole cannot agree on anything, it is often considered general consensus that Final Fantasy IX is one of the best titles in the series.
I, uh. I didn't like it.
This is blasphemy, I know. But I really didn't care for a lot of it. I get where it was coming from, and I understood the story it was telling. Some parts of that story did resonate with me — Vivi's entire arc is incredibly moving. But others (like everything to do with Zidane) fell completely, totally flat.
It's now been a decade since I played through the game, so my memory isn't as fresh as it was — and because I didn't like it, I have no real desire to replay it and see if my opinions have changed. I'm sure I'll get around to it eventually, and we'll see how I feel about it then, but for now, eh.
It's perhaps worth noting that FFIX was one of the last games in the series I had to play to catch up. It's clear that it's a love letter to all the previous titles from all the references alone. But while I could appreciate those references, it didn't really make FFIX itself notable to me.
I know lots of people love this game! But it didn't do it for me. Sorry.
While there are characters I liked in FFIX, I really have no particular emotional attachment to any of them. Objectively Vivi's story is very well written, but I just don't feel attached.
If anything, my favorite character is probably Quina because they're funny...
FFIX has a great soundtrack that I also have little attachment to. Again, there are fantastic tracks that I adore — "You're Not Alone," "Vamo' allo Flamenco," "A Place to Call Home," etc. And I'll happily listen to its tracks if they come up on shuffle.
But I really don't seek this soundtrack out on its own to listen to it. Again, it's great! But it left no mark on me whatsoever.
I barely remember any locations from the game, so I don't really have a favorite. I suppose the final dungeon is the most visually compelling? Sorry, folks, this is not my game.
Okay, here's where I have actual complaints: FFIX's battle system might be the worst of the turn-based games.
The encounter rate is unbearably high. There's nothing new or innovative about the actual battles except for Trance, and Trance is a disaster. The only reason I beat this game is because Garnet went into Trance and 1v1'd the final boss with no input from me. Uh, thanks?
Honestly, it's not my lack of emotional attachment that makes me not want to replay FFIX, it's that I didn't find the actual gameplay fun. I have no desire to go back to it.
